180_Collective

180_Collective is a recently formed collective from South Africa. Their work primarily explores socio-political issues through photography and/or videography. Zimbabwean born visual artist, Sonya Rademeyer, explores empathy through gestural drawing using both sound and movement as the vehicles to investigate this space through deep-listening. South African born photographer MyMalaika’s work incorporates both photography and videography in the exploration of her immediate environment. Although situated in the locality of the local, 180_Collective’s focus particularly looks at social issues pertaining to the African continent and diaspora as well as including a broader and more global perspective.

This short photographic series titled shouting from the boulders explores gender-based violence. The title references the Untitled poem written by acclaimed South African poet, Antjie Krog, in response to the brutal rape and murder of South African student Uyinene "Nene" Mrwetyana in August 2019. The images of Sonya Rademeyer’s performance – dedicated to “Nene” – were captured post-performance by MyMalaika_Photography. Seen from a broader perspective, however, shouting from the boulders references all women suffering from gender-based violence which, in the current time of the COVID-19 pandemic, has significantly escalated globally.
