Urbanflo Creative and Phoenix Art Space proudly present the inaugural Brighton exhibition featuring the stunning, provocative art of multi award-winning international artist, curator and researcher Alberta Whittle.
Living and working between Barbados, Scotland and South Africa, Alberta’s creative practice is informed by diasporic conversations and motivated by the desire to work collectively towards radical self-love, through film, sculpture, print, installation and performance.
This unique collection of recent work, curated by Jenni Lewin-Turner, explores very timely themes relating to personal healing and the cultivation of hope in hostile environments.

HOPE & GLORY: COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

'A Migration of Meaning'

Hope & Glory: Encountering Welcome is a unique and thought-provoking collection of work showcasing the multi-disciplinary talents of award-winning international artist Alberta Whittle who lives and works between Barbados, Scotland and South Africa. This stunning exhibition features ceramics, watercolours, films and digital collages with contemporary and historical references visually interrogating very timely themes which include im/migration and the impact of the hostile environment policy of the UK Home Office on the Windrush Generation.

Whittle’s portfolio fearlessly tackles very challenging but critical topics, namely the ‘othering’ and exoticizing of black bodies. The seemingly playful nature of her life-size installation of a figure in a contorted ‘limbo’ pose illustrates her talent for multi-faced and deeply evocative symbolism - the bright colouring belies the haunting reference to the extreme suffering and trauma of the Transatlantic Slave Trade, whilst also signifying the common misrepresentation and denigration of African and Caribbean culture.

Hope & Glory: Encountering Welcome appeared at Phoenix Art Space as part of Brighton Festival in May 2022. However, in response to community feedback about the content of the exhibition our conversations will continue over the summer. We invite YOU to share your own stories and creative talents for a virtual exhibition called ‘A Migration of Meaning’.  Submissions can include digital art, photography, letters, drawings, videos, animations and oral history. If you are interested in this project and would like to take part in ‘A Migration of Meaning’ please email community[@]urbanflo.com for more details.
