Brother, Uncle, Son

BROTHER, UNCLE, SON

Continuing our bonds with Martin (1964-1992)

Martin took his own life in 1992.

Brother, Uncle, Son, shows how his mother and sister have continued their bonds with him and found a healthy way to resolve their grief .

They were asked a number of open questions:

What did knowing Martin mean to you?

Are there particular times, places or ways in which you recall Martin’s importance to you?

Are there any special stories about Martin that he would like people to know?

What kind of things did Martin teach you about life and about how you could manage the challenges you now face?

What might Martin say he appreciated in you? What strengths did he see in you?

In what ways might you strive to grow closer to Martin across time rather than more distant?

What difference might it make to keep Martin’s stories and memories alive?

You can listen to the answers by clicking the audio file below or the QR code at the bottom of the page

The music underscoring their answers is the response of his nephew, Hardy, who never met him but has heard his stories and memories kept alive in the family.

Family members feel that through working in this way, they have found a place for Martin in their on-going lives. Such bonds are not denial: the deceased can provide resources for enriched functioning in the present.
